Butte County is calling for cover designs for its new 20-year plan for County-wide land use and development. The plan is entitled Butte County General Plan 2030, and is driven by a commitment by the Butte County Board of Supervisors to comprehensively update the County’s long-range planning.  For the next 20 years, Butte County General Plan 2030 will guide land-use planning for the 1,610 square miles of unincorporated Butte County. To date, development of the plan has involved over 100 public meetings and presentations. The hundreds of hours of input, discussion, debate, and hard work have produced a plan that is clear, relevant, and effective; but also flexible enough for the long term.

The County seeks a cover design that will reflect this commitment to the County’s vision of a future of excellence. Entries will consist of a cover design which includes the plan’s title and incorporates relevant photographs, sketches, or other graphics. Entrants may also submit an additional, optional design for a Butte County General Plan 2030 logo.

COMPETITION GOAL

The cover design competition is intended to provide an outstandingly attractive, legible, and memorable cover for Butte County General Plan 2030. Designs should be relevant to the goals, policies, and other information outlined in the Plan; and should consider the County’s unique character, environment, population, history, economics, and future. The optional logo may be used on associated documents or other items to provide an immediately recognizable and memorable brand for Butte County General Plan 2030.

GRAND PRIZE

A Grand Prize of $500 is being donated individually by the members of the Butte County Board of Supervisors.

Finalists will be selected from each of the following categories:

• Elementary School (K-6)
• Middle or High School (7-12)
• College or University (Undergraduate)
• Open (including graduate students, professionals, designers, and artists)

One Grand Prize Winner will be selected from among the finalists. The Grand Prize entry must include a cover design. Logo designs are optional.

COMPETITION SCHEDULE

• Entry deadline – December 1, 2009 (12 noon PST)
• Final judging and Grand Prize Winner announced – January 2010

• Cover designs must include the title of the plan: Butte County General Plan 2030.
   
• Entries should not include the Butte County seal.
   
• Cover designs must be suitable for publication at 8-1/2” x 11” with consideration for left-side binding; be formatted in portrait layout; and should complement the design and content of the draft Butte County General Plan 2030 posted online at www.buttegeneralplan.net.
   
• Optional logo entries must include the words Butte County General Plan 2030, and be suitable for reproduction at 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” x 2-1/2”.
   
• Entries must not have been used in any other publication, including online publishing.
   
• Each entry must be accompanied by a completed entry form (available at http://www.buttegeneralplan.net/cover_competition).
   
• Butte County employees, contractual employees and their immediate families are not eligible.
   
• Team entries will be accepted.
   
• Butte County reserves the right to refuse any entry, including those it deems incomplete or ineligible; designs that have been previously published; or designs which are found to be inappropriate, offensive or otherwise unacceptable. The County reserves the right to select any submission for the Grand Prize, or to determine that no Grand Prize winner shall be selected and no prize awarded.
   
• All submissions become the property of Butte County.

HOW TO ENTER

• Entries must be in Adobe PDF format. Entries which have been scanned into Adobe PDF are acceptable. If possible, also provide .jpg images.
   
• Complete the entry form at http://www.buttegeneralplan.net/cover_competition and submit it with your cover design and, if desired, optional logo design.
